June Newsletter

Dear Friend,

I hope all is well with you, and that you’re enjoying the summer. I’m just back from Italy, where I participated in a ‘Transpersonal Festival’, near Milan. It was my first time in Italy and I loved it. We stayed at the foot of the Alps, overlooking Lake Orta, and I loved wandering through the woods and swimming in the lake. For me, swimming in lakes or the sea is one of the greatest spiritual pleasures in my life. When you become immersed in water, there’s a sense of oneness, and a sense of returning home. After all, our bodies mainly consist of water, and the first ever life forms emerged in the sea. I had a great time swimming while gazing around me at the mountains and above me at the clouds and perfect blue spaces between them.

At the festival, I gave a reading from The Calm Center, and had a great response. I included some meditative exercises based on the pieces, and the atmosphere in the room became very still and spacious. Most of the audience were English-speaking, but there were a few non-English speaking Italians. Interestingly, a few of them came up to me at the end and said (through a translator) that although they didn’t understand the words, they could sense the feeling behind them, and also felt a powerful sense of stillness and spaciousness.
The Calm Center in the UK

After being published in the US in May, The Calm Center was finally published in the UK on June 12th. It quickly became a No. 1 best-seller - in the ‘Christian Meditations’ category! That was a surprise, since the pieces don’t have a Christian theme. But I guess spirituality in its pure form transcends all boundaries between faiths. There is a spiritual language which applies equally to all religions, and can be communicated between and beyond them. It’s a shame that so many religious people don’t have access to the spiritual dimension, and that for them religion is merely a question of dogma and identity.

Talk at Alternatives and the Mind Body Spirit Festival

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I’m doing a talk/reading on The Calm Center at Alternatives in London on July 6th. I'll be reading some of the pieces, discussing the themes and leading some meditative exercises based on them: http://alternativesevents.org.uk/event/steve-taylor-the-calm-centre/

I’m also doing a workshop/talk at the Mind, Body Spirit Festival in Birmingham, UK, on September 13th. Further details here: http://www.mindbodyspirit.co.uk/birmingham/whats-on/sunday

After my experience in Italy, I’m really looking forward to these events. There’s something about reading poems aloud - that’s when they really come alive. There’s also something special about when a group of people get together and develop a meditative stillness between them. The stillness seems to intensify and deepen, and a sense of sacredness descends.
‘From the Calm Center’ on-line event

On Sunday July 5th I’m holding my latest ‘From The Calm Center’ free on-line session. In this session, we’ll be looking specifically at detachment, and how we can gain a sense of wholeness and authenticity by dissolving some of the psychological attachments which we depend on for our sense of well-being and security. I’ll also lead you through my ‘detachment meditation.'

Click here to view and share this event; if you select 'Yes' underneath 'Are you going to watch?' the event will be saved in your list of events, or, if you don't have a Google account, you'll be given instructions on how to create one.
New Poem

Here’s a new poem, called ‘Illness and Resurrection,’ based on my own experience of becoming ill and getting better again. When I’m healthy again, it feels like a resurrection, as if my soul has healed as well as my body. Let me know what you think of the piece - it would be great to have feedback, as I’ve only just written it.

Illness and Resurrection

Illness is inevitable
when you’re weighed down by too many demands
and overwhelmed by too much information
when you’ve pushed yourself so hard
(after all, you push yourself harder than you would ever push anyone else)
that you’ve lost touch with your essence.

The pressure’s too great, and your being collapses.
It rebels and shouts ‘enough!’
and refuses to go on.

At first you’re frustrated -
how can you be ill when there’s still so much to do
when you’ve built up so much momentum and covered so much ground?
Surely you’ll fall behind, now that you’re sidelined?

But don’t resist - allow yourself to retreat and rest.
Let solitude and quietness embrace you
and guide you back to the centre of yourself.

Soon you’ll feel rich new energy seeping through
and beginning to replenish you.
Soon the broken fragments of your being will stir to life again,
draw together and slowly reassemble.

And as you grow toward wholeness
your senses will begin to open again -
tentatively at first, like flowers who are dazzled by new light.
Your mind will slow down and settle,
like a lake after a storm, as dust falls to the bottom.
Your blurred vision will begin to clear
so that you can see your path again.

And then you will reemerge
re-attuned to your essence
re-aligned with your purpose
healed and whole again
ready to begin your life anew.
_______________

That’s all for now.

All best wishes and blessings, Steve
