Steve Taylor's October Newsletter
|
Dear
I hope you are well. Apologies that this newsletter is rather late in the month, but I've been quite busy lately, doing audio and video interviews for my new publication The Clear Light, and also finishing off my next book.
My son Bill has been doing our family tree for a school project and we've signed up to an ancestry website. I always knew I had Irish ancestry (through my grandfather) but have learned we have Scottish and Welsh ancestry too, through my grandmother (who died before I was born). It reminds me that the idea of nationality is absurd. There are no
nationalities. Just human beings who live on different parts of the earth's surface. Some of us migrated away from Africa and developed some physical differences due to environment and climate. If we traced our ancestry back far enough, we would find that we all stem from the same group. Any distinctions between human beings are created by the mind. We are all essentially one and the same, physically and spiritually.
At the same time, it was interesting to find out about my background. In 1806, my 3rd great-grandfather David Taylor got
married to Elizabeth Pearson, in Manchester. On their marriage certificate they both marked their names with crosses, instead of signatures. I found it so moving to see their shaky, faint Xs on the certificate. They were obviously illiterate - and here am I, a few generations later, as an author!
For generations the Taylors lived in a poor and tough part of Manchester called Newton Heath. It's sad to think of the hardship they lived through, and the lack of opportunity to fulfil their potential or explore (and even just enjoy) themselves. It makes me feel very grateful to have those opportunities myself and gives me even more motivation to use my freedom in a positive way. Somehow I feel my ancestors
hovering around me, supporting me, encouraging me to fulfil my potential and make a contribution to the world on their behalf.
The Clear Light Launch Event
Speaking of me as an author, I'm holding a launch event for my book The Clear Light on Monday 2nd November, hosted by the Alternatives organisation. Because of these strange times, you can join the event from anywhere in the world. I'll be reading some of the pieces and leading some meditative exercises and
discussions based on them - and taking questions. The link is here
The Clear published in the UK!
The launch event is for the book’s UK publication. It was published in the US three weeks ago and has had a fantastic reception. I’ve been amazed by some of the email’s I’ve received, and also by the reports I’ve received about its sales. I’m quite humble and modest about my abilities as a poet and author, so it’s great to hear that my poetic reflections have been touching people’s
hearts!
If you’re in the UK, you can order the book here
In the US you can order it here
Free 'Spiritual Science' Event
On Wednesday 4th November, I'm giving a free online talk entitled 'Spiritual Science: How a Panspiritist Perspective Can Make Sense of the World.' This is (obviously) based on my previous book 'Spiritual Science,' and is organised through the University of Northampton in
the UK. I'll be leading a meditation based on the 'panspiritist' idea that consciousness is a fundamental quality in the universe and the role of the brain is to receive and transmit that fundamental consciousness into our own being. You can register for this free event here
New Podcast
A reminder that I have recorded some podcasts based on the book.
You can find it on Spotify here On Apple Music here
Beyond Boundaries
At the moment, we are living through a divisive period. All around the world, duality and conflict seem to be increasing. People divide themselves into groups with different identities and ideologies because we need to
define ourselves. The need is rooted in our fragile and separate egos. To belong to a group gives us a sense of identity. Adhering to an ideology strengthens our sense of identity. Being opposed to other groups with different ideologies strengthens our sense of identity. But - as I mentioned earlier - the differences are illusory. And hopefully we will one day transcend the need to maintain the illusion of difference. Here's a little poem I recently wrote about
this:
Beyond Boundaries
We separate ourselves into groups
when we’re not sure who we are
and need enemies and rivals
to strengthen our identity.
We draw dividing lines between each other
when we’re not sure where we are
and need to see boundaries and borders
to establish our location.
But when we feel secure and whole
attuned to our essence, beyond ego
then the need for certainty fades
and we feel our common oneness
and our mutual love.
All best wishes and blessings, Steve
