The Greatest Miracles
I’ve heard people talk of miracles –
how Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead
how yogis can survive without food or drink
and die and
bring themselves back to life
how monks can levitate or fly
or dry wet sheets with their body heat.
But I have witnessed even greater miracles.
I was there at the birth of my son
watching as a fully formed human being
emerged from the
body of another.
Still attached to his mother, he surveyed the room
with startled eyes, wondering where on earth he was.
He seemed to have come direct from another world
carrying lifetimes of wisdom.
I was as stunned as one of Jesus’s disciples.
Where had he been all this time?
How could such a perfect being
materialise out of nothing, like a phoenix?
And I was there at the death of my father.
I sat by his bed, watching and listening to each faint breath.
After a long pause, the next breath didn’t
come.
I looked into his eyes and saw that he was gone.
He was an object, cold and white as stone.
His consciousness had fled, like a bird out of a cage
into some hidden dimension.
Where had he gone?
How could he vanish so abruptly?
It was the ultimate disappearing act
worthy of Houdini himself.
And as I sat beside his empty body
I sensed that life has no beginning nor end
and birth and death are not opposites
but gateways we pass through, borders we cross
as we enter the next phase
of one endless miraculous journey.
Who Knows what Passes Between us?
Who knows what passes between us?
What strange unconscious forces spark to life
when we enter each other’s awareness?
Before we speak, even before we look at each other
vibrations are pulsing, currents are flowing
connecting, colliding and intersecting
too subtle to be detected
by any scientific instrument.
With our animal instincts, we examine each other
and scent danger or kinship, harmony or friction.
We sense the darkness or light of each other’s souls
and are attracted or repelled.
By the time we come to face to face, and finally speak
we already know each other.
Our intentions are already set.
Our reactions are already determined.
What can we do but trust - and follow, respectfully -
the wisdom of our oldest, deepest selves
like divers near the surface of the ocean
who marvel at the unknown depths beneath?
All best wishes and blessings
