Poems
Now on to the poems. These are three short poems that I have written
recently. I hope you enjoy them – let me know if you do!
Back to Stillness
Everything moves back to stillness.
Wind passes and the air is still.
Ripples spread, then water settles.
All sounds fade back into silence.
Even the human mind moves back to stillness.
Resting alone in quiet rooms
wandering through woods or climbing hills
our restless thoughts slow down
our anxious minds grow calm
and we return to natural harmony.
One Life
When you look into a stranger’s eyes
and see yourself staring back
and they return your gaze, surprised
to see themselves staring back
When you celebrate other people’s joy
and yearn to ease their suffering
as if there are no boundaries between you
and their feelings are your own
Then you’re no longer a solid separate entity
but a soft and flowing unity
no longer living your own life
but living as part of
one life.
Journey to the Present
How far we’ve all travelled to the present
through the journeys of our lives -
a million different paths of experience
that have led us all to the same place.
How far our paths have diverged
through different landscapes and climates
full of obstacles, dangers and wonders -
and at last we all converge
here.
Some of us are weary after arduous journeys
covered with dust and soaked with sweat
while others have barely begun their journeys
and are fresh-faced and eager for adventure.
But now that we are here, it doesn’t matter how we got here.
In the oneness of the present, our different pasts dissolve.
In the present, we are free of the past.
In the present, we are all equal.
So let’s celebrate our arrival.
Let's welcome each other home to the present
like friends who disembark from different ships
and embrace as they meet at the harbour.
All best wishes and blessings
Steve
